Conversations That Dare You
Responsibility, Reparation, and Release:
The Search for Authentic Responses to Guilt

I Don't Remember by ShaRize
(11:00)

This conversation grew out of a project spearheaded by Graham Reside, who participates in Herstory’s Beyond Bar Fellowship as an ally, bringing years of experience with working with men on Death Row. It centers on two questions that Graham is asking perpetrators and victims of serious crimes, as well as representatives of the general population.

What would you want from the person you harmed?

What would you want from the person who harmed you?

We invite you to listen to "I Do Not Remember," a work then in progress by ShaRize, and the conversation that follows with Graham Reside and Erika Duncan, Herstory's founder, as together they examine the forces of amnesty, amnesia, and what it means to forget. It is our hope that this recording will inspire writing circles and individual writers to write their own answering stories and find ways to share them in ever-expanding ripple effect.

This website was launched as part of "Writing Beyond the Prison: Reimagining the Carceral Ecosystem with Incarcerated Authors," a public humanities collaboration with the Humanities Institute at Stony Brook and the United Black Families Scholarship Foundation, supported by a Sustaining Public Engagement Grant awarded by the American Council of Learned Societies with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. It has enjoyed funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, Humanities New York with support from the Mellon Foundation, Flagstar Foundation, and New York State Council on the Arts.

We invite you to explore new ways of listening for narrative shape, to prepare you for moving from engaging groups from oral imaging to writing opening moments and scenes.
